Loon, our sustainability engineer based in Kuala Lumpur, reflects on his professional journey and the transformative power of thoughtful action with Bernard Business Consulting (BBC). We spoke to Loon about how his mindset has changed from being action-oriented to mindfulness for sustainability in his career.
Embracing a Thoughtful Approach
Throughout my professional life and personal life, I’ve been a person of action. When a new idea struck, I was eager to implement it as quickly as possible, often bypassing planning and reflection. Driven by excitement and momentum, I rarely paused to consider the steps ahead.
For a long time, I didn’t recognise this as a weakness. In fact, I saw it as a strength. However, I eventually realised that this impulsive approach was hindering my progress. Rushing into action led to numerous mistakes and failures, as I struggled to navigate challenges without a clear strategy.
These setbacks were not only frustrating but also time-consuming and costly. Yet, they didn’t discourage me. Instead, I learned valuable lessons from each experience, becoming stronger and more experienced in the process.
At BBC, I’ve been on a learning journey. The company emphasised the importance of slowing down, thinking critically, and planning carefully before taking action. This approach initially felt uncomfortable, as it required a level of patience and thoughtfulness I wasn’t accustomed to. It was a challenge to shift from my usual fast-paced style. But I understand that growth often comes from stepping outside our comfort zones.
The Power of Clarity
In the past, my lack of clarity often resulted in missteps and confusion. I would dive into projects without fully understanding my goals or the potential challenges.
Working at BBC has taught me the importance of taking the time to define objectives clearly, identify potential obstacles, and develop a strategic plan before taking action. This clarity not only guides your actions but also helps me anticipate challenges and make more informed decisions.
Interestingly, I’ve also learned that clarity doesn’t always come from purely intellectual pursuits. Sometimes, it’s through the process of taking action that you gain the insights needed. There’s a delicate balance between thought and action, and both are essential for achieving success.
A Sustainable Future
As a sustainability engineer, I’m committed to using my skills to create a more sustainable future. By combining a thoughtful approach with a passion for action, I believe we can overcome challenges and achieve lasting positive change.
