Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the theme, “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, for Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025. This theme reflects ASEAN’s goal of shared progress, ensuring that no one is left behind.

During the ASEAN Chairmanship handover ceremony in Vientiane, Laos, Anwar emphasised the significance of 2025 for ASEAN. It marks the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community’s founding and introduces the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, a two-decade roadmap for the region’s future.

Anwar pledged Malaysia’s commitment to consensus-based decision-making and building an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional architecture. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s dedication to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia.

Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s intention to expand economic partnerships beyond ASEAN, including the convening of the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) + China Summit in 2025.

Malaysia’s leadership of ASEAN in 2025 offers a unique opportunity for the region to accelerate its progress towards a more sustainable and equitable future. As a country with a strong economic foundation and a growing commitment to sustainability, Malaysia is well-equipped to guide ASEAN towards a more prosperous and sustainable path.

By focusing on “Inclusivity and Sustainability” as the theme for its chairmanship, the approach aligns with global trends and can help ASEAN attract foreign investment, enhance its competitiveness, and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

He also advocated for the inclusion of Timor-Leste in ASEAN, believing it would contribute to the region’s economic growth and overall vision.
